The Transit of Venus - June 5, 2012
An Observing Project in Canada's Northwest Territories

In Art and Song

At our group debriefing breakfast on June 6, 2012 at the Trader's Grill, we were treated to a beautiful performance by minstrels Sally Kilburg and Khati Hendry, who re-wrote and polished two old favourites in honour of the Transit of Venus.

VENUS IN TRANSIT
(sung to tune of "Venus in Blue Jeans" (1962)
Howard Greenfield and Jack Keller)

Venus in transit
We came to Yellowknife to see
Will the sky be clear and bright
Or will clouds ruin it for me?

Venus in transit
Why worry if it can't be seen?
We'll just take another look in

Twenty-one seventeen!

VENUS IF YOU WILL
(sung to tune of "Venus" (1959)
Johnny Tillotson, orig. sung by Frankie Avalon)

Venus if you will
I'd like to have a chance to get a thrill
And see you make your way across the sun
That's one dream you could fulfill.

Venus find a way
We've checked the skies with Alistair and Jay
And found the perfect place, if the bugs
And clouds will just stay away.

Venus, planet of love that you are
Surely this thing I ask
Can't be too great of a task

Venus hear my plea
And if you do, I promise I'll believe
In planetary love, or perhaps I
Really should just thank Steve.

Venus, oh Venus,
Make my dream come true!
